Prof. dr. Greet Van den Berghe is head of the Clinical Department and the Laboratory of Intensive Care Medicine at the KU Leuven University of Leuven, Belgium. This intensive care unit is a large (67 beds) tertiary center treating over 3100 patients per year, adults as well as children. She is also Full Professor of Medicine at the KU Leuven, and has been running an active research program on the endocrinology of critical illness since 1995. She has published more than 530 papers in peer-reviewed journals (h-index: 90, more than 44,500 citations), and has authored many chapters in international textbooks on intensive care and endocrinology. She is (co)supervisor of 42 defended PhD theses and of another 8 ongoing PhD projects. She has been an invited speaker at numerous scientific meetings worldwide. She has been a Clinical Research Investigator for the Fund for Scientific Research, Belgium, a member of the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine, was holder of a personal ERC advanced grant from the Ideas Program, in 2017 followed by a personal ERC advanced grant from the Horizon 2020 Program of the EU, is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina, and a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. She has received more than 60 scientific awards, among others, the prestigious Belgian FWO Excellence Prize Joseph Maisin in 2015, the 2020 Outstanding Clinical Investigator Award by the Endocrine Society (USA), the 2020 European Respiratory Society (ERS) Gold Medal in ARDS and the 2021 European Medal of the British Society of Endocrinology (BES). |
