Antonio Pesenti is Full Professor of Anaesthesia and Critical Care at the University of Milan. He completed his fellowship in Pulmonary at NIH in Bethesda under the leadership of Dr Theodor Kolobow, “the pioneer” of the extracorporeal respiratory support, and ECMO has been his main research interest till today. Other research interests include respiratory mechanics, lung functional imaging and gas exchange in ARDS, nutrition and metabolism of the critical ill, septic shock and cardiac arrest. He is national coordinator of a national “ECMO network” of 14 centers instituted by the Italian Health Ministry after the H1N1 pandemic.
