Education: Dr. Rafael Blanco completed his MBBS in Santiago de Compostela University, Spain in 1992 and then moved to UK for formal training in Anaesthesia as part of the South Thames School of Anaesthesia, working at the Guy’s & St Thomas, London. F.R.C.A 1999, D.E.A.A.2000 and C.C.S.T in 2002.

Achievements in regional anaesthesia

1. Founder, Honorary President and first Chairman of the London Society of Regional Anaesthesia.
2.NICE advisor endorsed by the Association of Anaesthetists of Great Britain and Ireland and co-author of the NICE Ultrasoundguided regional nerve block guidelines.
3.Described 2 new Abdominal blocks: Quadratus lumborum block type I and type II.
4.Described 3 new thoracic blocks: Pecs I, the Pecs II (modified Pecs block) and the Serratus plane block.
5. First to introduced the use of learning curves into Anaesthesia (CUSUM) as a method of training and evaluation for trainees experience.
6.Designed the first online anaesthesia logbook in the world, also integrating learning curves into the reports.
7.Designer of the first echogenic epidural needle ( Vygon, the Rafa Tuohy needle).
8. Editor of 2 books, 15 book chapters and 53 publications in regional anaesthesia. Delivered more than 80 workshops,116 international lectures,11communications,7 live demonstrations and 4 First prize communications.
